Illustrator and fine artist James Gulliver Hancock worked with students from Somerville Primary School to create a new mural at the newly upgraded Barber Reserve playground. James’ brief was to create a piece that links to the natural environment; that reflects connection to nature and the lands and waters around Somerville. Students requested fauna such as koalas, bees, dragonflies, microbats, hooded plovers and even a ‘bin chicken’
which they have noticed frequenting the area more recently! Some students were lucky enough to meet with James while he was painting and assisted with the creation!
Watch the film below to hear from James and Somerville Primary School’s Art Teacher ‘Katie Bingham’, about their experience working on the mural.
