The Mornington Peninsula Shire deeply values the vital role that local historical societies and groups play in preserving our community’s rich tapestry of history. These passionate organisations tirelessly safeguard landmarks, artifacts, and traditions that weave the narrative of our shared past. Through their commitment, they not only protect our heritage but also ensure that future generations can connect with and appreciate the unique identity of our community. The Mornington Peninsula Local History Network stands as a proud testament to this mission, uniting 24 dedicated members, including eight museums and historical societies. Together, they work to identify and preserve the peninsula’s history, making it accessible for everyone to enjoy and learn from this invaluable cultural resource.

The Dromana and District Historical Society

Dedicated to the preservation o the historical interests of Dromana and surrounding areas of Red Hill, Rosebud, McCrae, Main Ridge, Boneo and Red Hill South in the central Mornington Peninsula.

Flinders District Historical Society

The Flinders District Historical Society seeks to collect and conserve the local history of the Flinders District. It also makes this material accessible to current and future generations by publishing books, brochures and a regular newsletter with news and reviews from material held in the society archives.

Friends of the Collins Settlement Sorrento

The Friends of Collins 1803 Settlement group is concerned to preserve the landscape of the settlement site as it would have been in 1803. They are a group of the Nepean Historical Society.

Hastings-Western Port Historical Society

A vibrant, enthusiastic group of volunteers who are dedicated to promoting, preserving and enhancing the cultural and environmental heritage of Hastings and surrounding areas of Western Port.

Mornington & District Historical Society

The Mornington and District Historical Society Inc. held its first public meetings in 1963 and held its first Annual General Meeting in April 1964. Since then it has fostered research and interest in the history of the areas of Mornington, Mt. Eliza, Mt. Martha and Moorooduc.

Nepean Historical Society Inc.

The Society established its Museum in the Mechanics’ Institute, Melbourne Road, Sorrento. The building which is classified by the National Trust was built of local limestone in 1876/90. A multi-purpose Heritage Gallery, including multimedia and lecture facilities, was added in 1994.

Peninsula Ship Society

The Society meets monthly with presentations by guest speakers on maritime matters. Guests always welcome.

Collection: Books, videos and DVD’s associated with maritime matters. This collection is available to members.

Rye Historical Society

The Rye Historical Society is dedicated to promoting and preserving the History of Rye on the Mornington Peninsula
