Text from Rye Historical Society
In 2000, the Rye community was concerned about the proposed demolition of the Old Rye Schoolhouse built in1923 to replace the original 1875 structure. Local residents came together motivated by a strong desire to save this significant building. They were successful in their endeavours, and it was listed on the Shire’s Heritage Register.
The building is in very good condition and since that time it has served as the headquarters of the Rye Historical Society and houses the Pauline Powell Museum. It is located in the grounds of the current Rye Primary School, Cnr Lyons and Collingwood Sts, Rye.
