The Cyril Young Memorial Chapel

Tucked among the bush and sea at Shoreham’s Buxton Reserve, the Cyril Young Memorial Chapel is a peaceful, natural, open-air space where trees form the invisible walls and vault, and, at night, the stars shine above in the heavens. Originally part of YMCA Camp Buxton, its simple local stonework and timber seating reflect nature, and the spirit of a place where generations of young people came to explore, connect, and grow.

Dedicated as a war memorial, the Chapel honours Captain Cyril Young, who died as a prisoner of war in Borneo, and his brother Ivan Young, a RAAF pilot lost, missing in action over Libya. Both their story, and that of the chapel, commemorate and celebrate kindness, courage,  and community.

Cared for by local volunteers, the Chapel has been brought back to life through the efforts of the Cyril Young Memorial Chapel Association Inc. and the Mornington Peninsula Shire.

A new signage trail project will guide visitors along the historic path to the Chapel, sharing stories of Camp Buxton, Cyril Young  and the community who have kept this special place alive.

The Cyril Young Memorial Chapel Association

The Cyril Young Memorial Chapel Association brings together the Shoreham community, the Young family, the RSL, YMCA, and the Flinders District Historical Society. Together, they’re keeping the Chapel’s spirit alive — restoring the site, uncovering its hidden stories, and welcoming new generations to experience this special place.
