Rosebud Community Art Space: Exhibition by Matt Burgess

Matt Burgess grew up in the Mid North Coast of NSW. Spending his days in the ocean, bodyboarding and at the local Surf Life saving club. Matt has always had a relationship with the water, finding its power and ever-changing movements mystifying. At the age of 17, he joined the Australian Army which is where his affinity with the Ocean developed into an obsession, but a healthy one; a creative therapy.

As a 38 year old Veteran serving on several overseas deployments, sitting behind the lens of a camera which not serving in the Army is where Matt finds himself most at home and at peace with his experiences after serving his county. He likes to get in the water when it’s still dark – padding out with 8kg pf camera gear in his hands and a shark deterrent band on his ankle – in order to witness the glow of first light and the way light plays on the waves in magical ways.

After several years of keeping these captured moments and his ocean art to himself, he decided that the world needed to see these rare moments in time. What a rollercoaster this journey has been. Matt is now an international and national award winning ocean photographer and has inspired many to follow in his artistry.

Now living on the Mornington Peninsula permanently, Matt is excited to have the opportunity to continue to share these snapshots of this beautiful place that we all call “home”.
