Poul Grage
Playing percussion, drum kit and singing, Poul Grage traverses improvised, classical and non-Western music.
Poul’s sound palette is eclectic, drawing on American, European and Australian jazz traditions and “world” folk influences.
Poul began a deep dive into Brazilian music traditions in 2025, touring Brazil with community choir Borboleta Preta led by Diana Clarke.
Poul is a founding member of the Mornington Improvisers Collective, creating improvised music performances, community improvisations and workshops: Improv Jam at Make Music Matter 2025, KaBOOMBA samba workshops at the Broadway Rosebud 2026, Improvised Music workshop series in 2024, trio performances with Anne Norman and Ria Soemardjo at the 2024 Flinders Fringe Festival.
Poul was musical director of the acclaimed LIMB – Ode to the Trees, headlining the 2025 Flinders Fringe Festival, and Mirror Dance – Mating of the Weedy Sea Dragon, a 130 strong community production that opened the inaugural Flinders Fringe Festival in 2023, featuring Kutcha Edwards.
Poul directed and composed for Changing Seas video by Tasma Pittock and original music performance by ENGLA at FFF23.
Poul co-produced and performed in Windows of Longing multi-media “The Heffernan Project” for Banyule Council and toured central Victoria, supported by Creative Victoria (Nov 2021).
Poul’s solo recordings feature on poulgrage.bandcamp.com, including multi-tracked solo improvisations ØÜ and the upcoming release Karakete by my Kosmos Ensemble.
Lockdown releases from Calibrate the System achieved international airplay.
Poul performs regularly with Fabo Uko and FunArts (Batacuda/Singing Safari), playing local, national and international gigs.
He is a resident drummer and percussionist with the Westernport Regional (Big) Band.
Poul was a member of Aurora Lumina, playing highly structured third stream/chamber jazz with Jenny Game, Peter Neville, Michael Currie and Steve Falk.
