The Kokedama Lab: experimental plant sculpture

Step into The Kokedama Lab, an experimental workshop where the traditional Japanese art of the "moss ball" is reimagined through the lens of contemporary art and environmental stewardship.

Led by artist Chaco Kato, this session moves away from rigid rules and toward a free-style, process-driven practice. We will explore the tactile relationship between roots, soil, and spirit, using:

  • Salvaged & Recycled Materials: Repurposing what we already have to create life-sustaining vessels.
  • Hardy, Reclaimed Plants: Learning to work with species that thrive in a circular ecosystem.
  • The Slow Art Philosophy: Prioritizing the act of making and the rhythm of the natural world over mass-produced aesthetics.

Whether you are a plant lover or an art seeker, join us to create a unique living sculpture that embodies the beauty of sustainable, slow-grown art.

Lineup:

The Kokedama Lab workshop: 11am-12.30pm ($10)

DJ set by Bonnita: 12.45-3.15pm (Free)

About Chaco Kato's ephemeral public art

Exhibition: Sunday 8 March - Sunday 19 April

Location: Community Grow and Play Garden -Lyons Street, Rye

Chaco's project recognises the many ways women sustain cultural knowledge through everyday practices — from handmaking and repair to nurturing environments and communities.

Kato’s work reflects how creativity is often embedded in daily life, and how women’s contributions are expressed through ongoing, often unseen labour rather than permanent or monumental forms.
