Rye Community Group Alliance, in partnership with Mornington Peninsula Shire, invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) from experienced mural artists who live or work on the Mornington Peninsula for two public art commissions in Rye. Artists may apply for one or both opportunities.

Both projects are funded through a Shire Placemaking Grant and align with the Public Art Policy and Public Art Framework, supporting community-led placemaking and high-quality public art outcomes.

Opportunity 1: Rye Lions Shelter – Foreshore Mural

Point Nepean Road, Rye Foreshore
Artist fee: $6,600 (excl. GST)

This commission will see a site-specific mural painted across the exterior walls and internal divider of the much-loved Rye Lions Shelter, originally built in the 1970s and widely used for community gatherings, celebrations and the weekly Rye Kindergarten beach kinder program.

The artwork should celebrate:

  • Social connection and community life on the foreshore
  • Coastal recreation and beach play
  • Rye’s unique marine biodiversity and underwater ecology
  • Local wildlife (including dolphins, pelicans and seabirds)
  • A combined narrative linking above-water community activity with below-water environments

The mural will enhance a key community asset and reflect Rye’s strong environmental and social identity.

Opportunity 2: Rye Civic Centre – Bollard Murals

 12 Napier Street, Rye
Artist fee: $1,870 (excl. GST)

This commission involves painting a wrap-around mural on three bollards located near the Rye Civic Centre — a highly visible, intergenerational meeting place close to the kindergarten, community house and seniors hall.

The artwork should respond to themes including:

  • Community gathering and connection
  • Intergenerational use of public space
  • Everyday moments and relaxed social interaction
  • Coastal lifestyle and bay views
  • Playfulness, local character and light-hearted charm
  • Accessibility and inclusive public space

The murals will form the final creative layer in a recently upgraded civic precinct.
