Public Art: Environmental Futures

StoryWall_Environmental_EOI (3).png

The Mornington Peninsula Shire invites Expressions of Interest from Australian visual artists to create an original, temporary vinyl decal artwork for a prominent public site in Mornington.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop a large-scale (10m wall) public artwork that explores the theme of Environmental Futures through bold, concept-driven visual language.

About the Opportunity

Artists (emerging and established) working across all visual disciplines are encouraged to apply. The selected artist will create a site-responsive artwork that activates the exterior wall of the Mornington Shire Office.

The Theme: Environmental Futures

This commission is an invitation to think beyond crisis, and imagine what happens if we get it right.

We’re seeking proposals that are:

  • Aspirational, speculative, and thought-provoking
  • Transformative rather than nostalgic
  • Conceptually rigorous and visually compelling

Possible directions include:

  • Regenerative ecosystems that go beyond sustainability
  • Reimagined relationships between humans and the natural world
  • New systems that reject extractive thinking
  • Future mythologies, symbols, and visual languages
  • Complex, unexpected visions of better futures

This is not about literal depictions — think expansive, critical, and imaginative.

Artistic Approach

Submissions should:

  • Demonstrate a strong, original artistic vision
  • Translate complex ideas into a clear visual outcome at scale
  • Respond to the public context and material format (vinyl decal)
  • Avoid predictable or decorative imagery (e.g. clichéd nature motifs or corporate aesthetics)

Site Context

The artwork will be installed on the external wall of the Mornington Shire Office at: 2 Queen Street, Mornington

Located on the Mornington Peninsula, the site sits within a region of deep ecological and cultural significance, on Bunurong Country, and is known for its diverse landscapes, coastlines, and strong community identity.
