Every forever home begins with a first hello: new mural for the Community Animal Shelter
Artist Amanda Newman has been selected through a competitive Expressions of Interest process to design a vibrant mural for the Shelter’s Canine Connection Annex, where future dog owners will meet their new best friends.
For more than 30 years, the Shelter has provided care and compassion for dogs, cats, livestock and pocket pets—helping each one find their way to a loving forever home.
The purpose-built annex expands the existing site and will be a welcoming place where prospective dog owners meet and interact with dogs for the first time. Amanda’s artwork will bring colour, warmth and creativity to this special space, reflecting the joy and connection that begins when people meet their future pets.
Celebrating care, creativity and connection
The mural celebrates the bond between people and canine’s, bringing hope and inspiration to the Community Animal Shelter. It creates a welcoming space for visitors and staff, where lasting connections begin.
Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Anthony Marsh said the mural will be an inspiring addition to the shelter.
“Amanda’s vision captures the companionship we share with animals. The mural will not only brighten our new Canine Connection Annex but also reflect the care, compassion, community connection, and fresh beginnings the Shelter provides.”
About the artist
Originally from New York and now living in Melbourne, artist Amanda Newman has painted everything from mansions and theatre sets to theme parks and giant water silos in her 20+ year career. Known for her soft, realistic style, she draws inspiration from her lifelong love of nature and animals. Outside of her practice, Amanda enjoys long runs in nature and visiting dog parks with her daughter.
Amanda Newman said she is thrilled to be part of the project.
“It’s an honour to create an artwork in a space where so many meaningful first meetings will take place. I want the mural to embody the love, trust and companionship that dogs bring into our lives.”
The mural will be created ahead of the official opening of the annex at this November.
