Madame Elise Etzensberger (1853-1942): A Pioneer of Hospitality

 

Madame Elise Etzensberger was a pioneering businesswoman who played a significant role in the early history of Mount Martha House. She owned and operated the property from 1900 until 1916 a period when it was known as Mount Martha Coffee Palace. Her ownership and management established the venue as a popular destination for travellers and holidaymakers seeking rest and recreation on the Mornington Peninsula.

Born in Switzerland, Elise immigrated to Australia, bringing with her a strong European tradition of hospitality. Her vision for Mount Martha Coffee Palace aligned with the temperance movement of the era, offering an alcohol-free environment that emphasised wholesome leisure. Under her stewardship, the house became renowned for its warm atmosphere, quality service, and scenic location overlooking Port Phillip Bay. The combination of Swiss hospitality and the idyllic seaside setting made the establishment a favourite among visitors and locals alike.

Elise Etzensberger’s management of Mount Martha Coffee Palace contributed to the early tourism industry on the Peninsula. She created a welcoming space that not only accommodated guests but also provided a social hub for community gatherings and events. Her innovative approach to hospitality helped position Mount Martha as a desirable retreat for Melbourne’s growing middle class during the late 19th century.
