The Adaptation (Nature Finds A Way)
Inspired by the resilience of coastal plant life from the Mornington Peninsula and across Australia, The Adaptation imagines a speculative future where plants have evolved in response to changing environments.
Through digitally sculpted forms, this work creates a self-sustaining ecosystem of imagined plant species, each serving a unique purpose within a larger network. Some have evolved to capture moisture, generate light, produce seeds, or support the wider ecosystem. Extending beneath the surface, visible root systems reveal the hidden relationships that sustain life.
Exploring the adaptability and interconnectedness of nature, this work considers how life continues to transform and evolve over time.

About the artist
JUD Wimhurst lives and works on Dja Dja Warrung/Taungurung Country (Kyneton), creating artwork that explores the intersection of nature and manufactured environments through speculative forms. With more than two decades of craft-based sculptural practice, his recent shift towards digital processes utilises VR sculpting technology and computer software to explore shape, form and structure across the three-dimensional spaces that exist on both sides of the screen.
